“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and other have greater thrust in them”.

These words of wisdom by William Shakespeare could best be used to describe Prince ADEBAYO ADELEKE, popularly called BANIK, an Iree-born philanthropist, a man with a humble background who has strived to achieve greatness, both in private and public life.

Though, born in the 60’s into the royal lineage of Laro-Oye Ruling House of Iree, Boripe Local Government area of Osun State, the greater thrust in him propelled his choice of a humble and public-spirited lifestyle which has automatically manifested, inevitably in politics, public service and private sector.

From his birth year at Ikole-Ekiti to his present stellar moment, the chronicle of his life has held many spellbound. He is a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Osun State between 2019 and 2022 during the administration of the former Governor Gboyega Oyetola. Before, during and after his appointment into the public service, BANIK continued to be a rallying point for youths, either in political or private lives, a bridge builder between young and old and a fence mender between the rich and the poor.

He began his early education at St Michael Primary School, Oke-Imesi, Ekiti State for his Primary School Leaving Certificate and proceeded to St Stephen Modern School Oke-Imesi for his Modern School Certificate between 1975 and 1979. He then attended the Commonwealth College, Ilesa, (Now Ibodi Grammar School, Ilesa) for his Secondary School Certificate between 1979 and 1982. Between 1982 and 1985, he attended Oduduwa College, Ile-Ife and Ilesa Grammar School, where he sat for the GCE/A’Level examinations. In 1985, he gained admission to the prestigious Premier University, the University of Ibadan, Ibadan where he received a Bachelor Degree in Political Science in 1988. He didn’t stop there, he later obtained Master’s Degree in Intelligence and Strategic Studies from the Osun State University. Brought up to be focused and very hardworking, his rare leadership quality began to manifest right from his early age and he actually started his political activities from Primary School where he was made Class Monitor. He was Social Prefect at St Stephen Modern School, Oke-Imesi; Commonwealth College, Ilesa and Oduduwa College, Ile-Ife at different times. To cap it all, between 1987 and 1988, he was the House Secretary of the Students’ Union of the University of Ibadan. After graduation, the industrious Adeleke worked as Monitoring Officer, Directorate of Food and Rural Infrastructure (DFFRI). His job responsibilities at DFFRI include monitoring of project executed by the Directorate as an Inspector. He later had a shot in journalism at the Concord Newspaper where he worked as a freelance journalist between 1989 and 1991 when he was deployed to the Political Desk. Later that year, he shifted base to the non-editorial section as Sales Executive and he joined others to ensure nationwide circulation of Daily Concord and its sister papers  – Weekend Concord, Sunday Concord and African Concord. In 1999, he brought one of his strongest qualities that distinguish him from his contemporaries to bear by taking further step towards self-reliance. He established a privately-owned company, the BANIK Kiddies Nigeria Limited which specialised in the sales of kid wears, wholesales and retails in Ibadan, Oyo State. He later established BANIK Investment Limited, BANIK Impact Medical Supply Limited. Respectively, the companies focus on importation, sales and distribution of photographic equipment and consumables; supply of medical equipment and consumables and; building and construction.

Having made his mark in the private sector, both home and abroad, Adeleke’s wish and quest to affect lives more, propelled him to join politics, where he has also made mark, built leaders and affected lives positively. He served as Secretary, Security and Election Committee, Boripe Local Government in 2011. He served as a member Campaign Committee ahead of the 2014 governorship election in Osun state for the re-election of the former Governor Rauf Aregbesola for second term.
He was a National Delegate at the APC National Convention held in Lagos in 2014, a convention that led to the emergence of President Muhamnmadu Buhari as the party’s Presidential candidate.

In 2015, the Coalition for Change, C4C, a political group whose main objective is to canvass support for President Muhammadu Buhari and promote his Next Level Agenda also appointed him as National Patron. He was equally a member of the Campaign Committee in Osun State in 2015, preparatory to the presidential poll.

In 2018, he was the Chairman, Governorship Campaign Committee for Ifelodun/Boripe/Odo-Otin federal constituency at the gubernatorial poll that gave victory to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola. In 2019, he was a National Delegate to the APC National Convention in Abuja ahead of the Presidential poll, after which he served as the Chairman, Presidential Campaign Committee for Ifelodun/Boripe/Odo-Otin federal constituency at the presidential election and elections of the immediate past members of the National Assembly and State House of Assembly. He was the Secretary, APC Campaign Committee for the 2022 governorship election and Chairman, State Security Committee. He was a member APC National Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Special Duties Committee and Chairman PCC Security Committee in Osun State. Bayo Adeleke is also a member of the APC Elders’ Council, Boripe Local Government.

His service in the political arena has not gone without paying dearly for it, as he has at different times been incarcerated by political power mongers of the PDP era in Osun State, who saw him as a threat politically, with a view to keeping him out of their ways.

Adeleke had served as a member, Board of Directors, National Film and Video Censors Board, Abuja.

A former member, Osun State Water Corporation Board and a former Commissioner, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

By his position as a commissioner in charge of Local Government administration, he was automatically a member of the Governor’s Think-tank during his service.

He proved to be an effective team player and a bridge builder between the government and the governed by identifying with all categories of people.

What he considers a guiding principle in the discharge of his duties centres around giving utmost commitment, loyalty and respect to the constituted authorities. This has always been an asset and source of inspiration. He is known for being ready to take on new challenges and opportunities, which has remained his way of life. His reach to people political and otherwise is deep and penetrating. Over the years, he has been able to successfully help and assist fellow humans with whom he shared emotional and physical experience as well as those whose experience he has never shared. His limitless philanthropies are anchored on his capacity to love and empathise. Being a man of many characters, vocations and inspirations, BANIK is an active member of the Ibadan Golf Club, where he has the rare privileged of serving as Captain for two consecutive terms between 2011 and 2014. He is also a member Ikoyi Club 1938, and a member the MicCom Golf and Country Club, Ada, Osun State.
BANIK has been honoured with a number of awards for his service to humanity, community development, excellence in public service, strategic leadership, ambassador of Islam and vibrant politicking. Some of them were presented by: Osun State Polytechnic Iree Senior Staff Club, Osogbo Metropolitan Lions Club, Osun NUJ Hall of Fame, National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS), Muslim Political Awareness Front (MUPAF), Surulere Owode Community Development Association, Osun Commissioner of Police (CP’s) Award, Ilerioluwa Youths and several others. Adeleke is a successful and responsible family man and each time he looks beside him, he finds a beautiful woman who has persevered, conquered, standing firm and strong and shares the same vision with him. A caring family man is blessed with wonderful children and the family maintains a special kind of affection easily identified by a solid bond of cohesiveness and supportiveness.
